Vacancy Short Description : An excellent opportunity for an arable farm apprentice with an interest in mechanics to develop a long term career on a highly professional family run farm with a good track record for training new staff.
Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to thorough initial assessment to clarify course suitability. Entrants must have the ability to achieve GCSE grade 4 or equivalent in English and Mathematics. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Vacancy Full Description : The successful candidate will learn all aspects of the Crop Technician L3 Apprenticeship. Included in your duties will be tractor driving across all seasonal arable farming tasks along with the maintenance of machinery and equipment. Crop management, inc pest control, crop nutrition and soil management. Harvesting and storage hygiene. In addition there will be the environmental maintenance of land including hedges and ditches.

Personal Qualities : The most important quality the employer is looking for is the correct attitude, a good work ethic with a pride in the job done, attention to detail, good time management, be prepared to be flexible on hours at harvest, with the ability to communicate and work as part of a team whilst able to work on your own once trained; with a strong desire to want to learn and progress.
Skills Required : Ideally the successful candidate will have GCSE grade 4 or above in both English and Maths; be numerate and able to keep accurate neat records . A practical, hands on person with an interest in mechanics and engineering would be advantageous. As would a knowledge of computers. A previous knowledge of farming not necessary, the farm is experienced at training people from non-farming backgrounds The successful candidate must meet the safety requirements to drive a 7.5 t vehicle on the road.
Future Prospects : The future prospects for the successful candidate are extremely good. Poplar Farm is looking for the successful candidate to be part of their succession planning. Further development will be in place for the right candidate. Progression onto higher level qualifications along with all associated additional courses such as PA1 And PA6 amongst others will be forthcoming.
Training to be Provided : Crop Production Technician Standard Level 3 including Functional Skills in Maths and English if required
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour (effective from 1st April 2018). This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Shortlisting and Interviews - Shortlisting and interviews will take place throughout the duration of the vacancy ad. This may mean that the vacancy could close before the published cut-off date should suitable candidates be found.
Things to consider : Meeting the health and safety requirements to drive a 7.5 t vehicle/machine on the road is essential as machinery will need to be taken on busy roads. During the summer months hours will be longer to meet harvest requirements. However it is very rare and only when weather is very difficult at key periods that you would be asked to work two weekends in a row. All over time will be paid at commercial overtime rates. Must be comfortable working outside in all weathers as this is predominantly outdoor work.
