Vacancy Short Description : An excellent opportunity to join a small team in a modern arable farming business which has a good training track record providing the opportunity to learn all the essential skills from experienced staff and to take key certificates.
Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-D or 9- 3. Evidence of qualifications will be required. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Vacancy Full Description : Working on a large modern agricultural farming business, which includes contract work on local farms. The apprentice will have a mentor. Working on John Deere and Case tractors with RTK guidance, the role will include carrying out:
• Arable cultivations – range from ploughing to min till
• Supporting sprayer with liquid fertiliser bowser
• Tractor maintenance and cleaning, utilising the modern farm workshop
• Machinery cleaning to prevent cross contamination
• Conservation work and general farm maintenance
• Record keeping, grain store work inc loading lorries
• As skills develop roles such as fertiliser spreading will become available
For those who are interested there is some livestock work with both cattle and turkeys.

Personal Qualities : Someone with common sense and a mature attitude who can work as a team and, once trained, on their own operating high value equipment. Who is keen and enthusiastic to learn new skills and enjoys working outside at all times of the year. Who can organise themselves, is methodical and tidy and gets satisfaction from a job well done.
Skills Required : Suits practical hands on person. A full current driving license is desirable, as the applicant will need to meet the requirements to drive a 7.5t trailer on the road. Being mechanically minded is an advantage. An accurate record keeper who is numerate and literate. Someone who will be a good ambassador for the business with their customers. A willingness to learn is more important than an agricultural background.
Future Prospects : Potential to lead to a full time role taking on more responsibility and to gain work based certificates such as tele-handler operator and PA1 and 2; there could also be the opportunity to gain an HGV licence as the farm operates its own lorry.
The last apprentice is now a key member of the team.
Training to be Provided : College Attendance: 6 x I week blocks starting in October at Easton Campus.
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour with effect from 1st April 2018. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. Plus overtime at 1.5hrs @ national minimum wage for age (i.e. 18-20 year old = £8.85)
Shortlisting/Interviews - Shortlisting and interviews will take place throughout the duration of the vacancy ad. This may mean that the vacancy could close before the published cut-off date should suitable candidates be found.
Things to consider : The farm is in a remote location so a driving licence is preferred, as tractors with trailers will need to be driven on the road. The work is outside and can be in all weathers. Being physically fit and mechanically minded is an advantage. The nature of the job means that some work will be repetitive, especially at the beginning of the training period and here will be long hours at peak period such as harvest and autumn cultivations for which over time is paid at a fully commercial rate.
